About the Artwork:

The painting was created in response to the Selma Riots. It caused a lot of discomfort. Is Art something that is supposed to make one comfortable? This is the basic question. Consider the other images that are regularly printed in our papers and seen in the media. There is potency in a painting that a photograph does not have. If Artists and the public realize our power, we can move to regain our rights as creators and viewers. "As a painter, I've always felt that the still image ends up being more powerful than the moving image. The still photographer can catch the moment; the painter can create the moment. As Picasso said, "Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth."" - R. Cenedella.
